UDAYGIRI & KHANDAGIRI CAVES
Udaygiri & Khandagiri Caves was previously known as Kattaka Caves or Cuttack Caves, hold significant archaeological, historical, and religious importance in Bhubaneswar. These caves are a combination of natural formations and constructed structures. Administered and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Udayagiri hills and caves is one of India's pivotal archaeological sites. The caves depict imagery related to Vaishnavism (Vishnu), Shaktism (Durga and Matrikas), and Shaivism (Shiva). While some caves are naturally formed, others have been artificially constructed by the archaeological department. Initially built for Jain monks on the Kumari mountain range, these caves provided a dwelling place for meditation. Out of the original 117 caves, 33 have endured over time. Many caves are double-storeyed, and it is believed that the upper chambers served as spaces for profound meditation.

UDAYGIRI & KHANDAGIRI CAVES REVIEWS
Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves near Bhubaneswar are ancient marvels that transport you back in time. Carved into hills, these rock-cut caves showcase Jain monastic life with intricate sculptures. The site offers a fascinating blend of history, art, and spirituality, providing a glimpse into ancient times. The caves, numbering 18, provide a serene escape with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It's a captivating journey into the past, offering a unique experience for those drawn to history and cultural exploration in the heart of Odisha.
It is a great place with strong historic background, which makes it worth visiting. History: These honeycombed shaped hills with excavated rock-cut caves, essentially destined for the dwelling retreats of the Jaina recluses. These caves were first excavated by king Kharavela of Chedi dynasty and his successors who were devout Jainas during the first century B.C. The two hills symbolize one of the initial groups of Jaina rock-cut architecture in the field of architecture, art and religion in eastern India. These caves were first brought to the light by A. Stirling in 1825 A.D.
The fascinating historical wonders of Odisha are the Udaygiri and Khandagiri Caves. The historic rock-cut caverns, rich in detailed inscriptions and decorations, provide a quick but enlightening look into Buddhist and Jain culture. For those who enjoy history, the tranquil atmosphere and expansive views provide for a great visit. Suggested for a brief examination of Odisha's diverse cultural landscape. A special regard for all the personnel working here day & night to keep this place clean.
