“Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple, situated in Puducherry, holds historical significance as one of the renowned ancient temples. In 1700, the French authorities banned conducting poojas and festivals within the temple premises, specifically targeting Fridays. The construction of the Golden Chariot was solely funded through donations gathered from devoted followers. Notably, the temple stands out for its inclusive nature, welcoming worshippers from various religious backgrounds. Devotees express their reverence by performing abhisheka, utilising offerings such as butter, honey, milk, curd, fruit juices, conch shells (Sanka), gold (Swarna), and holy pots (kalas). The annual Lord Manakula Vinayagar Mega Festival takes place 24 days in August and September, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike. Despite the historical challenges, the temple remains a popular pilgrimage site and tourist destination in Puducherry. In response to the French restrictions in 1700, Hindus who venerated Lord Vinayaga protested and eventually migrated to the Moratandi English Territory.
