"Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal was built in 1635 by King Thirumalai Nayak as a grand royal residence, designed by an Italian architect. The palace is renowned for its majestic pillars, standing approximately 82 feet tall and 19 feet wide. The mahal, constructed with foliated brickwork, the palace's polished texture comes from chunnam, a mixture of shell lime and egg white. One of its main attractions is the light and sound show, held every evening, which narrates the story of Silappathikaram. Declared a national monument after independence, the palace is located about 3 km from Madurai Railway Station and 10 km from Madurai Airport.
