“Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Kerala, India. The Zoo was established with the typical iron-barred cages that were prevalent then. Renowned for its diverse bird species from Ethiopia and Australia, the zoo is home to more than eighty-two species worldwide. Covering fifty acres, including woodlands, lakes, lawns, and snake farms, the zoo has evolved from its initial focus on recreational purposes to a commitment to conservation. Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma (1816–1846), the ruler of Travancore from 1830–1846, envisioned the establishment of the Thiruvananthapuram Museum and Zoo. He accommodated various animals at his horse breeding centre, including elephants. Over time, the zoo's objective shifted from recreation to conservation. Visitors to the zoo can also enjoy a boat ride in the lake while immersing themselves in the beauty of nature.
